Wow
This seems to stay a hot topic for everytime I log on it is still on top. I currently live in Toledo and I know ghetto, I've watched my neighborhood deteriorate so fast it'll make your head spin. And now I live on a different side of town but I am not happy with Toledo anymore we have a anus for a mayor, who they foolishly re-elected they continue to ignore the worst area of the city, but think throwing up "new houses" in the more urbanized areas are a quick fix even though the house next to it is dilipidated. Our job market consists of retail and restaurant chains, there's nothing here to keep our youth out of trouble and they are always closing things down soon after opening them. So I have decided to take my children out, 2 little black boys who will soon become black men to give them a better chance in life. I heard about Columbus being a good place for Black people to live and after reading numerous posts here and visiting recently I think I've made a good decision, I visited the Blacklick area and it was so beautiful and clean compared to my hometown and to find that one living area McNaughtan Place had many Black tenants and the area was still very kept I was impressed.
Overall I just want my boys to be surrounded by positivity, to see the results of hard work, and most importantly not becoming a statistic like most of the black men these days, either dead or incarcerated all while experiencing diversity. I love everybody and being around other people than your own race makes you more understanding of people and that deep down we are all the same just with a little twist.
So I have to agree with many of you who say..."you don't know ghetto" until you've visited other places like Toledo, some parts of Miami, Brooklyn, and lest not forget Detroit, which I always say we are a little Detroit but without the casinos.

I think that you have made a good decision in moving here. The ecpnomy is the most secure in Ohio and there really are a lot of opurtunity's here. Good luck.

Ive been to Toledo and know a lot of people from Toledo and the city isnt that bad. There isnt a lot of jobs there and the city is kind of old but its not ghetto. Its far from being little Detroit, it only had like 12 murders last year compared to Detroit that had near 400. If anything is close to being little Detroit its Cleveland, Cleveland had 134 murders last year. Columbus had 79 murders last year.
I still think Cleveland is worse than Columbus and that video really didnt change my opinion. That video looks no different then where I used to live on the Southside of Elyria in the early 90s. Those stats that you are talking about mean nothing really. If the city of Columbus only took up 76 sq miles then Cleveland would still have a higher crime rate, and if Cleveland took up 210 sq miles and merged with the close suburbs the crime rate would still be higher then Columbus' crime rate. Columbus does not have more gang problems then Cleveland does either. A few years back Cleveland had the 5th most gang presence of any city in the country. That is saying a lot since Cleveland hardly has any LA or Chicago based gangs.
Im saying thats a bad thing and I wish Cleveland wasnt doing so bad but it is. Columbus crime rate isnt that bad and Clevelands murder rate is about 3 times higher.

Well I don't know what side of town the few people you know stay on but in the inner city, not the outskirts like Maumee, Holland, Oregon, etc. is where there are a lot of rundown houses, if you would come up to visit now or have been to any other cities you would have to agree that our citites scenery is Blah. All we have is the Zoo, Botanical Gardens, baseball stadium, and we did have a COSI but the citizens chose not to support it so now it is closing. They built a new bridge that is somewhat awesome the first time you cross it but the railings are very low and heaven forbid an accident happen on it because more than likelly someones goin overboard. Less not forget after many years they are finally building a new sports arena but on the downside they want to name our local football team the Toledo Woodpeckers, ooh how intimidating and catchy that will be...as one of my co-workers stated oh...your a Toledo Peckerhead, so yea I'm getting out of here.
Go on Sperlings Best Places to live and look at our statistics and comments left by people who live or have lived here....no it's not THE worst place but it seems to be on a fast track to no where.

I would just like to comment that I was born and raised in Toledo, moved to Cincinnati to attend college, moved to Cleveland thereafter, and now I'm in Columbus, or rather Reynoldsburg. Toledo, Cincinnati, and Cleveland are by far much worse than Columbus. Furthermore, there aren't too many area suburbs that don't have their own problems w/drugs and crime. Some people would be surprised about many of the residents living in Pickerington, Reynoldsburg, Bexley, and German Village. Crime is not always about black versus white, or rich versus poor. Crime exists everywhere, I've just noticed that people tend to see it more when it's associated with minorities. I came to Columbus for an excellent job, plenty of those hear in my opinion, then I had to investigate and determine for myself which area is best to live in, plenty of those also.

Good Points Ms. Kay, and I agree with you. People do tend to pay more attention to crime and poverty when it is related to minorities.
And to the person comparing Columbus to Cleveland, believe me it is not even close. That video could have been made in any city above 100,000 people in the country. It just shows that a lot of gang members were able to get together to shoot a video. Cleveland has a much worse gang problem than Columbus has. The last time I spent a lot of time there, I can remember it being more about Gangster Disciples, Vice Lords, and Latin Kings, than Bloods and Crips, but gangs are gangs. And the suburbs are not includied in the city population or the murder rate. The actual city of Columbus is larger than the city of Cleveland, but the Columbus Metro Area is much smaller than the Cleveland Metro Area. The Cleveland suburbs are larger and more developed than Columbus suburbs. You really have to see these areas to judge them or compare them to Columbus. It really is all about perspective.

columbus has pockets of very hood but alot of not-hood-at-all so it ends up leavin the city relatively safe. theft/burglary is huge in c.o. esp. off osu campus and short north/near east. east main, cleveland, joyce, kelton out east and sullivant on the westside are rough. but still cbus aint close to cleveland and aint even in the same convo as cincinnati

BOY that video just about sums it up....no Columbus is not as bad as Cleveland but it's not that far off either...some people are just used to it and turn their heads and go on about their business...as long as people set back and say 79 dead in a year is OK then the city will just get worse over the years...

That video really means nothing. Ive seen videos on youtube with gang fights in the middle of upper class suburbs with 5 car garages. 79 murders is not okay but its a good change from the year before when they had like 109. At least its not near as bad as Cleveland or Cincinnati.
