In my opinion, from a 1 to a 10, Columbus is about a 3. Philadelphia, Detroit, they are closer to 8 or 9. Parts of Cincy and Cleveland, more of a 5.

VERY good point. It's very much a matter of perspective. On the grand scheme, I'd agree with your rating of about a '3', especially when compared to Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati.

Im not trying 2 but if you dont think it has a crime problem go WALK(not drive) down cleveland ave(north) ,livingston ave(east), South Central ave(west), whittner ave (south). Just walk down in those hoods and see what happens thats why cops roll in 2s and have another cop car a block away.
Not all of columbus is nasty but there is still things goin on in like groveport, dublin, grove city, worthington and grandville. A couple of weeks ago they found 300 pounds of weed in a grandville townhome you may think weeds nothing but thats still drugs in a clean decent suburd full of good working people. You may not know this but alot of drugs are starting to come in from S. Chicago,Detroit and cleveland.
So what if cleveland has worest crime stats then columbus thats just means there were more reported crimes not every crime is reported you know.
I know this crack house over on abby lane by morse road where there are some columbus cops that are paided off by a dealer from south chicago.

More crimes reported? not every crime is reported?... Cleveland is the worst city I have ever been to when it comes to reporting crimes. Hardly anybody in the city ever reports crimes so actually when you think about it the crime rate in Cleveland is a good percentage higher than it already is. People in Columbus definitely report crimes more than people in Cleveland. Part of it is that the crimes happen to much in Cleveland to even complain and another part is the cops dont show up most the time to report it anyways.

^^I agree with LASam. This thread is terrible! But, maybe it's people like me who have kept it going by posting...
Just like what was said before, every city has its "good" and "bad" parts. And Cle440, stop trying to make Cleveland look bad! Christ!

I live in Los Angeles (As I assume Sam does) and I can tell you, all the major mid-western cities have ghettos that rival South Central LA. In Columbus, check out the area around Livingston Avenue where it intersects Champion or Ohio Avenue or the area around Lockbourne and Whittier streets. Every other house is boarded up or has broken windows. The US Department of Justice provides extra funds for law enforcement for this area. It's been very bad for a long time. When I lived there in 1971 there were riots just like in Watts. Cars were burned, rioters battled with the police, etc. That's about as "ghetto" as you can get. The website Realtor.com lists houses in this area for sale for as little as $6,000.

I don't see any rich people moving in to the south end and saying "this is my city too". They wouldn't last a day. Perhaps you are thinking of Bexley. Rich people surrounded by ghetto? Yes. But the rich people were there first. The rest of the neighborhoods went to crap, and the folks in Bexley have the money to keep the crap out of their area. But why would anyone want to pay that much money to live literally one block over from cracktown?
Your best bet is not to live anywhere inside 270. A good way to gauge how far the bad areas have spread is to watch the chain stores. For example, HHgregg was located on Alum Creek. They then moved to Brice Rd. They have since closed that store and moved farther out to 256/Hill Rd. The same is true for most of the stores on Hamilton road/Brice rd. They are either closed or in the process of closing once new stores are built further out.
On the west side, I would look in London/West Jeff. On the east side, I wouldn't live any farther in than Pataskala/Jeffersonville.

I completely agree. Having lived in the south end and having visited relatives on the Hilltop, I can definitely say that Columbus not only has a lot of traditional ghettos, but that these ghettos are also populated by white people. I recall another poster commenting that when we say "ghetto" it's a code for "poor black inner-city area". I've also heard people say that "ghetto" is a racist term. Not so. At least not as it's used here on this forum. You'll find plenty of dilapidated housing and high crime south of German Village and you'll find white and black people living there. I remember when I was a litle kid living in the south end, our neighbor was shot and killed in an armed robbery at the drugstore on the corner of Champion Avenue and Whittier Street. Around the same time Haney's Drugstore near Hague Avenue and West Broad Street (Hilltop area) was the scene of a double homicide/robbery. As a kid these atrocities seemed commonplace in those neighborhoods.
Ulsterscot is right about another thing. If there are rich people living in a neighborhood surrounded by run down areas, the rich people were there first and the areas around them began to run down after WW2... you won't find many rich people who wake up one day and say, "I think today is a good day to move to Parsons Avenue". I think the exception is german Village. I can remember (early 70s) when it was a run down welfare district. Now of course it's a very desirable area and has been beautifully restored.
One thing I will say about the Columbus ghettos, poor black people and poor white people live in the same neighborhoods with relatively less racial tension than in other parts of the country.

I've always heard the short north is a very nice area, while some of the posts on here potray it to have problems. I'm considering moving to the area to go to OSU and this is a concern for me. Should I live there or somewhere different? I want to be able to walk to class without any problems.

bill2112,, for you to say "you shouldnt live anywhere inside of 270" is just totally wrong.. you are the kind of person that would be afraid of your own shadow in most older cities. what a joke you are for telling people that !
