Well I'll toss in my pennies as well. I've been to Columbus several times but live in Atlanta. Atlanta is the poster child for all things "ghetto", so trust me, I know ghetto when I see it. Columbus is in most areas not such a place (at least compared to here).
There is a difference between people making racist comments, and people making realistic comments. "Ghetto" has for decades referred to poor, crime-filled black neighborhoods - much the same way that "trailer park" is usually made to reference poor crime-filled white neighborhoods. The thing is, ghettos are always inner city, close, cramped.. easy to find being centrally located and close together. Trailers park references are spread out among the far burbs, one here, one there, over a much wider area. You don't see trailer parks downtown in any city. So when someone asks if a city is "ghetto" then let's be realistic and not get ruffled.. yes, they are asking if the city has a lot of poor, black, crime-filled neighborhoods. Period. They have a right to ask it, and everyone has a right to answer it (or not).
I found Columbus to be smaller than many centrally - it doesn't have a big city feel to it at all, but it's also not too "Mayberry-ish", either. Just enough stuff to keep you busy, but you don't hear police sirens in most areas 24/7 either. It's all relative to what you compare it to - crime at least from what I read/see doesn't seem to be beyond the norm for a city of Columbus's size, unlike here in Atlanta where we could have a 24/7 TV station on the carjackings, shootings, and home invasions, and still not have enough time to report all of them each day. While there was a dodgy area or two on my visits I don't remember ever being in a neighborhood there that made me go, "whoah Tonto, get me the hell out of here!" (unlike some areas here).
As with any city, if you're trying to avoid crime or bad areas and are completely new to an area, call local relocation services to get their opinion, and rent first before you buy - that way if you wind up in a bad area you can just move across town before you're locked into a purchased property.

I've seen the 2006 crime reports and Cleveland has a higher crime rate than Atlanta.Cleveland had like 120 homicides last year, this year Cleveland's on pace for 130 or more.I always here about how bad Atlanta is,but it is actually a growing region and city.Cleveland on the other hand has a growing crime rate, growing poverty rate, loss of population, and it seems that no one notices this except people in Cleveland.I was just stating this because when I heard you say Atlanta is the poster child for all things ghetto,I thought to myself Cleveland should be the poster child. The only reason people think Atlanta is so ghetto is because they see the rich rappers on TV in neighborhoods that they ain't even living in.People don't get to see Cleveland's ghettos.Cleveland is a much rougher place nowadays than Atlanta. But places like Cleveland,Buffalo,Gary,Newark and Kansas City Missouri are the forgotten ghettos that no one notices. We really need help in these cities. They have really high crime and off the charts poverty.I've heard if Cleveland keeps going down the same rout,in 25 years it will be a city of 300,000 with half of its residents living in poverty.

Columbus and Indy I've noticed generally don't have true ghetto areas. I don't know if it has anything to do with their size, population, layout, etc. They just don't seem to have the same ghettoes as other larger Midwestern cities like Milwaukee, Chicago, the Twin Cities, St. Louis, Kansas City, Detroit, Cincinnati, and Cleveland.

Columbus is alot more spread out than all the other cities. Eastside of Cleveland is where most of the murder and crime come froms. Columbus you can go too all sides of the city and find povety...And with poverty comes crime...If you was to put all of the bad areas in Columbus on the same side of the city like Cleveland you would have major problems.
Ohio along with the whole midwest is messed up..
Dangerous cities
3rd Cleveland
9th Cincinnatti
500,000 or more population...Infront of Houston Texas And behind Miami Florida lies...Columbus
Youngstown and Dayton made the list for smaller cities...If Cleveland and Cincinnatti would include their outer suburbs it would be just like Columbus

trying2bloom, im really suprised by your description of Canal. which section of Canal do you live in? its true that the outskirts of columbus (on the brice side of 33) have some problem neighbors, but ive never seen anything your described in the actual village!. if you live in on of the subdevelopments like ashbrook or westchester its very quiet and quite nice. ive never seen kids run around the neighborhood and the only blasting music ive heard has come from white neighbors. as far as fights go, in the 10 years ive lived here ive only heard ONE fight, from a white couple that was going through a divorce. ive seen messy yards from white and black families.
also, considering that canal is only 2% black (in the actual village) ive got to wonder where all these black people are coming from to offend your non-racist, open minded family?

Why would you add the twin cities there? No place in Minnesota has a true ghetto area. North Minneapolis is not even that ghetto. True ghettos are like Southside Chicago, Eastside Cleveland, Most of Detroit, and NW Milwaukee. The twin cities is just one giant suburb area with 2 small urban areas in the middle.
