Default Pickerington/Reynoldsburg Ohio???

I am going to have to apply for disabled housing [have looked up places already] and I am poor, will be living on disability check. I have my brother in this area, so am thinking about moving near him. He has two school aged children and is divorced. He is the relative who is going to help me move with his friends. He does have some health problems but is not disabled. I am very sick, so keep this in mind, I have congestive heart failure, thyroid hormonal disorders and other problems.
In Michigan I am housebound 80% of the year if not more. At least Columbus will be somewhat warmer in winter...

But I am not sure if I can handle a big city or not. I like small town life, {I lived in Hillsdale MI happily for almost 9 years but it died:doctors fleeing, church closed, friends telling me it is a ghosttown} but I do not know where to go I am going to be newly divorced and trying to apply for disabled housing even all over the state of Michigan..{small towns in Southern part} I live in St. Joe/Benton Harbor now. I was told by social workers here and at regional disability center that when I divorce, I need to leave here, because there are no social services here. I am sick enough to get a visiting at home doctor, and there are serious medical issues I am facing. Even weather affects my moving, winter too cold for me to be out in car even, and summer weather.

I dont want to be a burden on relative, but social worker told me it would be far better to go where a relative is, then not but what is Pickerington/Reynoldsburg Ohio LIKE? Will I feel run over by the traffic? Are the people friendly? Are there any old downtown areas? What is the social services system there like?

I lived in Chicago-Rogers Park before and HATED IT...so keep that in mind for answering my post.

I have to make decision based on thesethings and needs.

1. safe disabled apt.

2.low crime area. {I hate ghettos and fear ending up in one, because of nightmares I had in Chicago}

3. good transportation system, I can drive a little but not sure I can keep car going, that I have now.Brother told me Fairfield County does have transporation system for disabled.

4. decent social services {unlike where I live now}

5. programs for disabled, betterment, counseling, if I was able to recover somehealth. want to make more of own money and probably would pursue more money-making online--I supplement income now online--very little pin money.

6. good bible believing church, a Weight Watchers club and other groups.

7. decent enough hospital.

8., good library.

9. People who are friendly to disabled and wouldnt be abusive to disabled fat woman.

Living by brother is a definite PERK, I am worried about being in some town alone even a small one in Michigan. I want to be as indpendent as possible but brother would help me on rare occasions I would need it.

Sorry you're going thru all this, it's good to have a familiar face in your area but is your brother def. staying in the area - ? Sounds like your plan is well thought out. At any rate, am sure you'll make friends thru church and other groups, right now it seems like you have a lot of hurdles (and you do) but just take it one step at a time, one day at a time, it'll all fall into place. Best of luck

The only public transportation in Franklin County (that includes Columbus, Whitehall and Reynoldsburg) is the COTA bus system and that does not operate in Pickerington because Pickerington is in Fairfield County, so I would live in the Reynoldsburg or Whitehall area if I were you.

Try to find an apartment off of East Main Street because the COTA bus picks up passengers every 15 minutes to an hour at bus stops along Main Street. The bus runs on 15 minute intervals until you reach the MCL restaurant on East Main Street. The bus stops only once every hour at bus stops east of the MCL restaurant until it reaches Carlyle Drive in Reynoldsburg which is the last stop on Main Street. The #2 Main Street bus will take you all the way into downtown Columbus where you can stay on the #2 bus and go north on High Street taking you into Clintonville as far as the Graceland shopping center or transfer to another bus and go pretty much any direction you want. The #2 bus ride from the MCL restaurant to downtown Columbus will take you approximately an hour but it is nice to know it is available to you in case you need it.

Mt. Carmel East Hospital is located between Reynoldsburg and Whitehall but is on Broad Street and pretty far off the street so I am not sure how easy it is to reach the hospital via the bus. There is a Weight Watchers group in Reynoldsburg and many churches although you may need to drive to those. I am really not sure. The library in Reynoldsburg can be easily reached via COTA bus. Franklin County also has Meals on Wheels that delivers meals to the disabled and elderly daily. I think Franklin County has better social services than Fairfield County.

The apartments will get nicer, have less crime and be more expensive the further east you go on Main Street. Just remember the last bus stop on Main Street is Carlyle Drive. I hope this helps. Best wishes!

You can try Pheasant Run Apartments. They have disabled housing units mixed in with family units. They are located right on the Pickerington/Reynoldsburg line. Reynoldsburg address and Pickerington school district. You can get a disablitiy pass from COTA and they will send an handicapped bus to pick you up at your door. The apartment community has a great social services network within the community. Good luck with your search.

Stay away from Pheasant Run Apartments. they are crime ridden. People are scared to call the Police there! See this web page for proof.

Note: Remove the & the from each end of the web page.

Can you believe that children would do this? These kids are not even 14 years old!

Reynoldsburg and pickerington are horrible areas to rely on public transportation. In pickerington, there is no public transportation at all. There are a few bus routes through reynoldsburg, but not near housing (they go through the main roads, which have businesses, not houses).

Housing is typically in subdivisions, and most subdivisions have only one or two entrances from the main road, making it a long walk just to get our of your neighborhood. And then a long walk to any kind of bus stop, store, or restaurant.

There was a home invasion robbery and shooting in the 1st week of July. Ghetto thugs robbing drug dealers in the "Affordable Housing" behind Pheasant Run.... Brentwood Lake Apartments is the place. 7 robberies within 1/2 a mile of here in July 2009!

I lived in Pickerington for over a decade. For one thing there is ZERO public transportation, if you don't drive you're housebound. I didn't spend much time in reynoldsburg so I can't comment as much there, but I really disliked Pickerington. It's an expensive, conservative, white preppy middle class sub developement nightmare. Some of the older subdevelopements are nice but there's been a LOT of new housing over the years and it's all crowded cookie cutter neighborhoods.

There is basically nothing in Pickerington. The closest hospital is in Reynoldsburg. If you move to the wrong part of Pickerington, you will be totally isolated, and the people here are NOT friendly. And Pickerington taxes go on forever, but they can't seem to deliver services to people and I believe "meals on wheels" was voted out. There's no economy in Pickerington, and therefore-- no services.
