Bethel Rd. is considered the NW section of the city. The NW side is A) very safe, B) many mixes of homes and condos, and C) has a great retail section. The area is also located very close to OSU and short commute to downtown and all of the great downtown neighborhoods.
Many OSU students, especially grad. students, have lived in NW Columbus. It is a great option. The area is very urbanized for a more suburban post 1980s development. IF you are looking for a more urban/gentrified lifestyle with brick streets and coffe shops Bethel will not be your area. There area neighborhoods such as Grandview and the Short North closer to OSU that will fit your style.
If you are looking for a neighborhood that is walkable for a suburb, nice, and near OSU (with driving and limited bus service) then Bethel Rd is perfect.

It is a nice area but its car oriented with somewhat suburban sprawl ( cookie cutter houses and strip shopping centers).

I agree Bethel/NW Columbus is not the most character, but the area is one of the most walkable and attractive for a newer (post 1960s) section of the city. It also has a very healthy retail strip with a lot of interesting local ethnic restaurants/shops such as a Japanese strip center located at Reed & old Henderson Rd.
I believe a lot of this areas stability occurs because it is the city of Columbus but with some of the best ranked Columbus City Schools. Also, the area sits between the well off suburb of Upper Arlington and near Dublin and Worthington. Both of these areas use Bethel Rd and Henderson Rd for retail and thus keep the retail sector healthy and the neighborhood values up.

Bethel Village is a good choice fot student due to Bus transport and the movie 12 -- budget entertainment for movie goers! Many OSU students live around Bethel road too.

Hi,
I have lived at Bethel Village for 17 years. I would highly recommend you buying there. Now is a good time to buy a condo.

Another incoming grad student here...how long would you estimate the commute to OSU be on a weekday morning? I'm debating renting closer to campus for a year and then buying, but with the market the way it is, maybe I should suck it up and buy now. I'm just antsy about a "long" commute and traffic.
