Once you have been to a Wegman's everything else pales.
The reason the grocery stores are not nice is lack of competition.

Unless, of course, you have been to Jungle Jim's down here near Cincinnati

What are you looking for? By definition those high-end-beautiful grocery stores wold provide better services instead of do it yourself. Try ALDI at corner of Sawmill Rd and Bethel Rd. I am sure you would have a fun time packing all stuff in the most efficient time and ways.
Or Whole Foods at corner of Sawmill Rd and 161 Dublin Granville Rd.

I'm looking for a MODERN store that doesn't still have carts that are 25 years old - that's what I'm looking for. The Fresh Market has modern carts, but they aren't that close.

Also, when is the Clintonville Giant Eagle ever going to be done with renovations? It seems like it's going nowhere.

Publix is nice because the cost of groceries are abolustely outrageous. I was in NYC this past weekend and saw some grocery prices were cheaper than my local Publix ... and prices are closer to being double what the prices are in Columbus. A basket full of groceries here costs me a good $40 - that could get me a cart full of groceries at Giant Eagle, let alone Super Walmart or Meijers.

Weedy, why not try Meijer? They have Video Cart for the kids! Only $1 per trip.

We love Jungle Jim's. And now you have an Ikea. We make it an all day run when we visit Cinci. JJ has the best produce. And fish market.
We do love the Giant Eagle's. We will miss them when we move to Florida. But, thank God for Publix. Great store.
The Super Walmart in Lewis Center is fairly clean. And the staff at the registers now speak English. Makes it much easier when they ask you a question.
Not a huge Meijer fan. Their prices are a bit to high. But they do have good produce.

Our experience with Columbus grocery shopping was that the WalMart Super Center in Lewis Center had a great combo of good prices and selection, but the meat wasn't nearly as good as Giant Eagle or Kroger. The store was also reasonably clean. We ended up splitting our food order between the stores.
Earlier on, we shopped at bit at Meijer on Sawmill Rd, but found the cleanliness to be unacceptable. Just our personal experience. When we first arrived at Columbus we kind of alternated between Meijer and Cub Food, which was located on the east side of Sawmill Rd, just south of Rt 161. We ended up really liking Cub, but they left the market around the mid-1990's.
Regarding the modernization of stores, we shopped at the Kroger in Hilliard, off of Cemetery Rd, and really liked it. Decent size and selection. If you want to see some really huge supermarkets, take a look at both the Kroger and Giant Eagle out in the Dublin perimeter area, where Rt 161 crosses Avery Rd.
Finally, regarding Publix in Florida, I go there when making my annual parents visit, and their prices are really, really, really high.

We have noticed that Publix is extremely high. What about Winn-Dixie? Are they any good? One good thing in the Melbourne area, they have two great butchers. A real butcher store. Kinda like the old days.
We do like the Wal-Mart Lewis Center. But never purchase their meat. Giant Eagle is the place for that. Plus they have a great wine selection
Meijer on Sawmill is not a clean store. Shopped there, I think, twice. And it was enough.
I miss having a butcher and a real bakery. Not a grocery store bakery.

No, Winn Dixie is a little cheaper, but the dirty stores and horrendous customer service will force you back to Publix ...
In Columbus, my favorite "butcher shop" was Andersons.
