U huh
So these people coming to Columbus in search of a job have an SUV overloaded with bags of money?

I'm not really sure what a fashionable sense is, around here it seems to be an urg to hoard Uggs.

Having a job at A&F and saying that instills the abilities to run a fashion boutique is like saying home gardening prepares you to be a commodities broker. Or pig farming prepares you to be an MD fighting swine flu.

Yeah, clearly there's no talent in Columbus, that's why we only had two designers on the last season of Project Runway.

AGREE. Columbus has had two local designers on Project Runway. Just another testament to the level of local artistry in the area.

A point that I think will help bring this bipolar thread together is that while I boast of Columbus' creative/hip/younger population is not fact that the entire city is this way.

We have parts of our city (mostly NW/N of downtown area) that are young/vibrant/educated, and we also have a minority part that is more working class/non college educated (on the South Side) It seems as though those with the negative perceptions live near this population.

However, it can be said with evidence that the majority of Columbusites are more whitecollar, college educated, and likely to be progressive on social issues than most midwestern cities of the similar size.

Growing up in the 315 northside corridor in Worthington/Clintonville and now living just south of OSU in the hip Short North "my Columbus" is a place of excepting values, education, white collar jobs, wine shops, and hipsters and diversity. "Your Columbus" could be a very different place depending on which area/culture/neigborhood you live in. That is why I love this place so much.

Comparing Columbus to Michigan you could live in Ann Arbor and have a liberal/college town or in Detroit and experience a urban minded diverse city, or in Lansing and be in the capital and center of government. In Columbus we have all three of those cities in one.

The central city Columbus is the more hip area and the central city population is the size of a midsized city like Akron or Dayton (around 200,000) people. That is a midsize hip town in the middle of one of the largest cities in the US.

Tenzo often remarks of those with "religion" pushing it down your throat. I have not lived in these areas of Columbus, but have driven through these areas and can attest that there are some areas like this but they are nearly only 30 percent of the city and tend to be in the south and west sides, two places that I would never live in. Specifically the rather rural and uneducated south side.

I recruit for one of the aforementioned retail companies and can tell you we do move many people from NY here who love it. I would say 7/10 really love Columbus and appreciate the easier lifestyle, great schools, low cost of living and highly educated population. The rest really do have culture shock and last about a year and move back to NYC. There will always be die hard New Yorkers that wouldn't want to live anywhere but.

Tenzo, you seriously worry me. I referred my beloved dog walker to you and I really do fear for her safety. You sound very strange, bitter and depressed. I wish you would move back to wherever you came from already.

I have lived in many cities, most recently in Chicago for 7 years..awesome city, but I have to tell you that I wouldn't move back after being here. Columbus really is a hidden gem. It will never be a Chicago in terms of size or level of excitment, but lots of us (I happen to work side by side with 4 from Chicago and 2 from NYC) wouldn't leave if you paid us. I personally have never been happier not to work on the 70th floor of the Sears Tower especially today when they convicted those wackos of having a plan to destroy the whole building. It's nice to be someplace that is a little less stressful than the big cities.

To the person who mentioned Limited Brands has been laying off, umm..in case you haven't noticed everyone is. If you read the financials, Limited has a billion in the bank, little debt and a billion in untapped credit. I think they will make it.

from someone who spends alot of time in columbus, my vote is for cleveland.. many cool neighborhoods, better downtown entertainment, playhouse sq., cleveland orchestra, museums and culture of university circle, sail-surfing/sail-boarding on lake erie, pro sporting events, fine dining,etc.. after you explore high st. and a few adjacent neighborhoods it starts to get a little boring.. but if you are a student at osu its a great place to party.
