Moving to Columbus area
We are moving in the next few months so my husband can work on his Ph.D. at OSU. We have 5 kids and are from Wyoming and Utah. Where would be a good place to look to buy given our larger family, lower income, need for space and safety? We've been looking in Hilliard and Galloway. There seem to be ALOT of listings for Galloway. Is it a nice place? Is there a lot of crime? How is the commute to OSU? Is it quiet? We'll be in Ohio looking over the next few days. Any ideas? Thanks so much.

Galloway is out there on the SW side. it's somewhat country.
Hilliard is nice but houses everywhere and traffic.
I live on the south east side of the metro and I love it. If you are looking for terrain the souteast metro of Columbus has rolling hills, the sw side you are looking at is pretty flat.
I can't give you stats on the crime on the SW side but SE its pretty low. I live in the village of Groveport and its quiet, you can leave doors unlocked, feel safe.
Commute to OSU from the southeast VIA the 33 freeway to I-70 into the city may be around 20 minutes without traffic. With traffic who knows... the way people drive around here there isn't one day that goes by that any of the freeways doesn't have multiple accidents
Everyone on here will tell you where they live is a great place and they are correct. Columbus is surrounded by great places to live for any income bracket.

How much of a commute to you want? Do you want city or country or 'burbs?
Upper Arlington, Worthington, Marble Cliffs area and Grandview are nice and close to OSU, but you might find them expensive. Clintonville is also nice - it has city schools and different folks have different opinions about how good they are. I don't have any experience with them.
Dublin and Pickerington are nice, but further out.

I agree with the Groveport post.
Every time I go down there I'm impressed
The sprawl seems to be going North and people are missing the good bargians in the south.

you want "low income" AND "safety"? those two are negatively correlated, that is, you can't have them both, unless you move to the country.
here's where you'll find the most square feet per dollar (within a reasonable commute to OSU): whitehall, hillard, grove city.
these areas are safest: dublin, upper arlington, worthington

Hilliard and Whitehall are two very dissimilar communities in terms of income, crime rates, home prices, schools, etc. I would also Grove City and Whitehall don't share a lot of similiarities, either. Hilliard and Grove City share more in common, but there are distinctions and differences between those two communities, as well.
