You may be just as well off to move to Michigan, SE Michigan is a huge area and spread out there are many things to do. The Lake Huron is only about a 90 minute drive. The Detroit Metro area has around 4-5 million people.

I do live in SE Michigan. Harper Woods is a small suburb on the Detroit border. I'm literally 4 blocks from Detroit. The problem is, the metro area is 4.5 million but there is not enough jobs. There are way more people than jobs, and we still haven't seen the fallout from GM and Chrysler yet. I love Detroit and would like to stay, but I have to start creating options.

Columbus has really moved up on my list. According to mapquest, it's only 3.5 hours from Detroit. I could come back to Detroit on weekends, go to Tiger games, hangout at the casinos and come back to Columbus. The more I talk to people in Minnesota, the more unfriendly they seem. Sure I have family there, but if the people are that unfriendly and uninviting, it doesn't seem like a good fit, plus I'd be 10-12 hours away from Detroit.

What are some of the major employers in Columbus I could look into?

Also, I'm not going to get murdered in Columbus being a Michigan fan am I?

Play it safe and don't fly a Michigan Wolverine flag during "Michigan Week" in November. Everything is "Buckeye" in Columbus -I lived and grew up in Warren Michigan between Mound & Ryan roads & 10 Mile road. Went to CenterLine High School. I moved to Dallas Texas in 1980 got married & divorced in Texas and moved to Columbus, Ohio in 1991, and currently I have a job transfer to Omaha, NE. The economy in Columbus is far better than Michigan, housing is cheaper, it's a much smaller city than Metro-Detroit with only about 1.7 Million people in the whole Metro area. Major employers depend on what kind of work you do, Columbus has more warehouse jobs than factory jobs. The Big Lots main warehouse is in west Columbus at 300 Philipi Road just north of Broad street. There are alot of medical jobs and white collar jobs and government jobs. Columbus is the state cap. Cincinatti, Ohio has more mfg. jobs and it's a quick drive to Michigan on I-75 from Cincinatti. That may be another city you might want to look into.

You went to Center Line High? I used to live at 11 and Van Dyke in Warren. I moved before I was school age but I would've went to Center Line as well. My best friend graduated from Center Line.

I wasn't going to go around wearing Maze and Blue, but last time I was in Ohio, I felt I got a little harassed by a cop because I was from Michigan. I was on 75 between Dayton and Cincinnati and a cop pulled me over. The first thing he said was "You're from Michigan huh?" He was real rude to me, and the reason he pulled me over was because I had snow partially blocking my plate.

Most of the Michigan hate is around the Columbus Ohio area. Normally around Cincinatti it's not that bad. During the football game week with Michigan there are reports of cars with Michigan license plates getting slashed tires, The Buckeyes take it way to serious. The OSU area gets alot of riots after any football game, if they win they party & riot, if they lose they get mad & riot, they start fires in trash bins and flip over parked cars till the cops move in and clear the area. These past few years it was not as bad because the school threatened to kick out any students caught rioting after a ball game. The 1990's had many OSU riots.

That was a concern of mine, not being accepted because I'm from Michigan. Has anybody else experienced anything like this?

A lot of Columbusites are big OSU fans. There are accounts of incident between rivlary fans, but they are not not the norm. It seems other than a slander being yelled or something of this nature it is more rare than normal that you would be attacked or have a violent act against you for being a Michigan fan. These types of stories seem to be limited in occurrence.

I have lots of friends from Michigan and one that wears a UM jacket everyday and he is a professor at OSU and has lived to tell about it

Yes in the 90s there was some riots by OSU students after a game. This hasn't happened in 8 years or so.

For most of the time it's a lot of fun.
There are a lot of friendly jokes. OSU fans talk about their football team (they got us there)
We say that we had to settle for a school with good academics.

The only time you have to hide it is in "Michigan Week", where they will deface your car, put a rock through your window. Forget about going to the OSU / Michigan game. I have heard multiple incidences of people getting stuff thrown on them and being spit on.

Strangely, the people who did not attend OSU are the most rabid fans.

But I digress.
Bottom line, no problems except for one week of the year.

Indeed, for the most part the problems are during "Michigan Week", however even Michigan cars in town for another reason or just passing thru are at risk for getting their tires slashed or car windows broken and things like that if they hang around the High Street area during that time. It also seems more one sided, Ohio fans who go to Michigan are not at attacked as much. It must of happened, but I never heard of a Ohio car getting it's tires slashed in Michigan. The Buckeyes seem to take the Michigan game way to serious. The rest of the year Michigan hate is not too bad.. Andrea Cambern did stories about this on channel 10 news over the years. (She's central Ohio's sweet-heart news anchor).

I went to U of M.
The Ohio State Michigan game is just a game. An important one, but just a game. OSU people are welcome.

There is no 'beat Ohio week'

A lot of this is due to multiple rivalrys

Michigan States big game is Michigan vs Michigan State
Nortre Dame's big game is Michigan vs Notre Dame, etc.
