I have lived on the Hilltop near Mound and Columbian for over a year. I moved here from Clintonville. I love this area. I have wonderful neighbors and a nice little very affordable house. I have had no problems at all since I moved here. It is a mixed neighborhood - African-American, Latino and White which makes it a place that reflects our society. There is even a Turkish couple not far from me! The Hilltop does have some "iffy" areas but you can avoid them. Craigslist is a great place to look, as is metro-rentals.com. It breaks down different rentals by neighborhood. I agree with previous posters; stay out of Hilltop. The near east side can be pretty dodgy as well. I live in a 2br/ 1.5ba Townhouse in the Kenny & Henderson Rd area that only runs me $560.
The cost of living in Columbus is one of the best of metropolitan areas in the country, so you can certainly find safe, affordable housing if you take the time to look.

If you are still looking, DO NOT MOVE to Whitehall or the Hilltop. Those are the worst areas you could go to here. I think you would be very dissapointed with what Columbus has to offer if you go there.Plus the surrounding restaraunts and stores you are talking about around there are all run down and it's just not fun driving or even living around there. Bexley, Pickerington, Reynoldsburg, are good diverse neighborhoods plus in Pickerington and Reynoldsburg they have brand new restaraunts built through half of them ( they are right next to eachother ). There is a good side of Reynoldsburg and then there is the old side, (towards Whitehall), Blacklick, and Canal(boring) are okay.Being Black in Columbus you should NOT have a problem. (I am white) I think the black people in Columbus are very predjudice against me. I had a bad experience with many of them. I have been to a lot of places and they ARE different there (to me). I was not racist at all but I have never been treated so badly by any black person anywhere else than I have in Columbus. I don't know what you meant by racist, if you are worried about racist white people stay out of Lancaster. Lots of Hillbillies. lol. Good luck, if you insist on moving to Whitehall some good apartment complexes are Hibernia, and Park Hill. They are on Main St.(Columbus address if map questing) and across the road from eachother. Park Hill is about $1100 a month but well worth it. Very very very spacious with big kitchen and jacuzzi bath tub and shower. I hate whitehall and I would move there. Hibernia is nice, it's in a wooded area and mostly students live there. You can get units with a fireplace too. Both have pools and both are nice (Park Hill is luxury apt.) Hibernia runs about 780 for 2 bedroom. The highway is literally right down the road(turn right from complex, it's right in front of you) and the nice area of Reynoldsburg (for grocery shopping) is strait down Noe Bixby (the road it's on) and its a relaxing scenic drive on the way to it. 10 minutes to downtown on highway. It's a good location but just don't go down main st. lol. It's not too bad but there are nicer areas and more too see in other areas of columbus. Good luck to you.

You must be joking.
Bexley and Pickerington are 93% white, and Reynoldsburg is 85% white.
People don't move to those areas for the diversity.

I have several African-American friends who live in Reynoldsburg! As for Wilson Road, there are some very decent apartments off Wilson Road, north of Interstate 70. (I have friends from India who live in apartments in a large complex on Wilson Road, and it's very modest, but you can tell from the cars parked everywhere that it's not a "low rent" group of people, even if the rent is low!) Also, I'd give consideration to Reynoldsburg and Pickerington/Pataskala. These neighborhoods are reasonably inexpensive, safe, and diverse. Also, there are nice pockets in/near Berwick (east/central neighborhood, which is near Whitehall but nicer and safer in my opinion).

I work in Whitehall, live in Pickerington, and just moved out here from Hilliard, and lived in Galloway before that. To me, Whitehall is ghetto. I work at a video store on E. Main St and I get a lot of really cracked out people. Pickerington is beautiful, but very expensive. Hilliard is great in my opinion, but like Galloway, it is quickly getting overrun with Mexicans, which may or may not be a bad thing to you. It isn't a big deal to me. I prefer living in Hilliard, because the people in Pickerington do not know how to drive to save their life.
Good luck with the move!

Have you looked at the North by Northwest neighborhood? It's in between Grandview Heights and Upper Arlington. Surrounded by two great areas, but without the cost of living in GH or UA. There are a lot of apartment complexes and duplexes in the area and it is relatively close to the Grandview Commercial Strip.
