I am no longer an Ohio resident but still try to keep up on the news - I saw that the Casino Amendment passed - where will it be located in Columbus? I did some googling and found one news story saying on the west side of the Arena District, is this correct? I hope so, Columbus already has a very prosperous downtown and I think that will make it even better.

FWIW - I now live in Nevada and casinos are A-OK with me

I've heard it will be near Huntington Park and will open in 2012.

I've heard one report yesterday that Nationwide Arena is not getting enough in rent from the Columbus Blue Jackets and have lost money on the building over the last 5 years. They are looking at possible puting another tenant in there and are looking at that tenant to possibly be the casino which would mean the team would relocate to another city. If that happens you can say goodby to downtown Columbus and all the restaurants and businesses that are primarily in business due to the events in the Arena.

I'm not quite sure what you're getting at here. Even if the Bluejackets leave town, that doesn't mean they will demolish the arena. Presumably, the restaurants and businesses downtown would still benefit from all the other events that would still be held at the arena. And just instead of the hockey crowd, they would have the casino crowd. The casino crowd may be smaller than a hockey game, but it would be open every day all year round as opposed to games which are just occasionally and only during hockey season. I think it would average out.

Although, I don't think a casino is the best way to supplement the economy, I think somewhere in the Arena district would be the best place for it. It would draw a few more people to downtown, and the importance of the Arena District to Columbus would help to ensure that the city keeps the area safe and well planned out.

On a side note, I hope the Bluejackets don't move. I rather enjoy going to a game every now and then.

Also, to clarify, I don't think a casino would take over the arena and be the sole tenant. I just don't see the facility being suited for a conversion to a casino. They would probably build on a brand new site, leaving the arena for other events.

I never said anything about the Arena being demolished. Regardless whether the casino will be in the Arena or be built in the arena district a lot of the downtown restaurants and businesses will be hurt. Right now when there is an event in the Arena, people come downtown, they go out to eat and one of the many restaurants in the area and some will stroll down High St before or after the event to visit some shops or have a drink after the event. But that is not how casino's work. Part of a casino's business strategy is to keep people inside for as long as possible. That is why most casino's do not have windows or clocks and they have all the ammenities inside like restaurants, bars, shops so people don't have to leave. When most people come to the casino to gamble they aren't going to leave in the middle of gambling and walk down the street to eat. No, they will do everything inside the casino because it is convenient for them. People aren't going to walking around downtown if they are coming to gamble, they will be inside the casino. Over a dozen restaurants that rely on arena events for business will be replaced with 3-4 big name restaurants that will be located inside the casino's. Casino's are successful because they do a great job of ensuring that people spend their money in the casino whether it's gambling, dining, or shopping. Notice how you typically don't have a lot of shopping outside of casino's even in Vegas. Everything is inside. Same thing will be in Columbus, people will come downtown, but the casino owners will make sure that people spend their money in the casino's and not at other businesses in the downtown area. I am not judging and saying that this is wrong or right. I am just saying that a lot of businesses downtown will suffer.

They just need to keep the casino downtown wherever it will be built downtown Columbus is hurting for business ever since the city mall closed down. Most cities keep the entertainment downtown our downtown in Columbus to me is dead we need a jumpstart.

It seems like the recent trend is to put entertainment downtown but starting about 30-40 years ago entertainment began moving out to the suburbs and by the highways as people abandoned downtowns and became more dependent on cars. I hope the trend of moving more entertainment (and business and residences) downtown continues.

In response to the BJ's moving - if they leave town I don't think it will decimate downtown, it is a winter sport and they are only active for part of the year a few nights a week. It's not like they are playing hockey every day for the whole year. It certainly wouldn't help, but it also wouldn't be the end to downtown.

Hockey has one of the longest seasons in all of professional sports. It starts in September with pre-season and can go all the way into June. I am not sure where you got that it is only a winter sport. Jackets can have as many as 4 home games a week some weeks, plus there are other events in the summer. When the league was on strike a few years ago, there were daily news stories of how all the restaurants and business that operate in the arena district were struggling because of lack of attendance. Before the Jackets there was nothing to do downtown. All of the downtown revitalization projects started around the arena district. Downtown area has become a desired place to live in the last 5 years, but you stick a casino there and that all will go out the window. Do you want to live a few blocks away from a casino? I wouldn't. It's one thing to have events and hockey games a few nights a week, it's another to have a 24/7 casino with all the noise, alcohol, and everything else that will come with a casino in your backyard.

To answer your question, YES. I live ONE block away from casinos and can see two of them looking out my front door and am perfectly fine with that. I live in a quaint and quiet small town in central Nevada and have never had a problem with noise, alcohol, drugs, etc.. The casinos and hotels here bring tax revenue, jobs, entertainment and tourism.

People who have never been around casinos have these crazy views of them thinking that there are drug runners standing outside, gun fights every night, loud noises (???), and drunks breaking into your house or car. Those views are completely un-founded, illogical, and dead wrong.

This is what I can see from my home and don't understand how this could be considered a terrible eyesore and nuisance:

If you don't believe me, come visit and contribute to the local tourism industry :-p
