I just thought of something else too...I had the free trial of McAfee on my computer when I bought it but when it ran out, and I didn't renew, I started having this problem. I wondered if it was a firewall problem too. I was considering downloading AVG...because I can't afford to pay for the McAfee right now...but won't do anything till I get this problem figured out.
The link is to the same solution I pasted in my previous post. I just didn't want you to think it wasn't a real solution.

I tried to but guess I didn't succeed because I'm still getting those dang pop up windows telling me I need to renew. Do you think that's a problem? I'll try again.

At this point, you need to get McAfee off of there. Avast and AVG both have emergency CD files you can download (on another machine) so you can do a virus scan directly from the bootable CD. I recommend using something like that after you get McAfee removed. However, I think the problem opening links will be solved after you get Malwarebytes to run a full scan and clean off the spyware.

McAfee is totally uninstalled now. I tried to download AVG but for some reason it didn't 'take'. Will try again. I had Malwarebytes but my brother took it off, for some reason. Can I just reinstall that too? I'm still fairly computer illiterate but am learning a few things! I did a complete scan yesterday, using the Microsoft scan, and everything came out "clean". I'm really stymied by this.

Thanks to all for your suggestions.

Edited to say...Malwarebytes is now reinstalled, did a scan and everything is okay.

So when you say everything is OK, do you mean you can now click links and they work? You never said if you tried the Microsoft solution that I posted earlier.

Go to Start, Run and type in regsvr32 urlmon.dll. Click OK. If a message pops up that says
"DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded," the problem should be fixed. If
that still doesn't work, try typing in the following commands in the Run box (one
at a time):
- regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
- regsvr32 Msjava.dll
- regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
- regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
- regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
- regsvr32 Browseui.dll
- regsvr32 Shell32.dll
One of these options should solve the link problem you are experiencing.

You really, really, seriously, NEED a virus scanner. The majority of the users on this forum recommend Microsoft Security Essentials first, then AVG, then Avast, then others. All of these are free. Can you click on links now?

I downloaded AVG. Ran another scan and it says things are fine as far as viruses. Still can't get links to work.

AZDesertBrat -- if it was me, I'd install another browser such as Firefox and see if links work. If they do, then the problem probably lies with your IE. If not, then there's something still lurking in your OS.

Have you gone to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced tab and clicked on Restore Advanced Settings, or on Reset?

I'd try Reset first, then Restore Advanced if it doesn't work.

BTW, very good advice mawipafl
