I purchased an Acer netbook running Windows 7 Starter edition. It only came with 1GB of memory. I noticed on some websites when I play video it looks a bit choppy and freezes a little. Would upgrading the memory to 2GB help this? How much should I expect to pay for 2GB? According to the owner's manual there is one soDIMM slot.
Go to crucial.com and use their system scanner. It'll tell you exactly what you can do. More memory will help Windows run more smoothly but the choppy video could be caused by a bunch of different issues. Netbooks have slow processors and poor graphics performance, both of which are bad for video. Your Internet connection might not be fast enough. The web site might not be fast enough. Drivers or codecs may be out of date. I'd still upgrade the RAM but I won't guarantee that it'll fix this specific issue.

You can check if the system has any physical memory available from the Windows Task Manager (performance tab) while you are using the computer.
While moving to 2GB will help in general, the Atom (especially the single core version) that is used in most netbooks usually has the "slow" Intel graphics. So those two together can't fully do some video functions, like fullscreen HD video (unlike the Atom + Ion graphics). If you are talking Youtube, etc..., you should try to upgrade your version of Flash to 10.1 from Adobe's site. That version has more hardware supported features for improved video playback, which may (or may not) help out.

I checked the performance tab, and I saw that while running a video on Hulu, my CPU usage was around 80% and I had about 300MB of available memory. So since I had that much available memory I assume adding more RAM won't help any.

Yes, that would be my guess. Hulu full screen HD video is a killer, but you should try the Flash update.
