Wired it works great. Wireless it sucks. Clunky, hard to follow installation instructions and it never did work right wireless. Scanning was useless from the printer to a program. I had to copy the scan to a USB drive then to the PC.
First, do you really understand how wireless works and do you really need it? How many computers do you have? If you just have one desktop, there's no need for wireless. If you have several computers, you're better off sitting the printer next to the router and wiring it to the router. A wireless unit is only useful if you need to locate it somewhere away from the router, but not too far or you'll get out or range. Whether the PC's are wired or wireless is irrelevant to how the printer connects.
If you still need a network all in one, wired or wireless, then I'll suggest anything but HP. The next time I see one of them fail to find the device over the LAN, I think I'm going to drive to their HQ and detonate it in their lobby. I hate them that much.
I have a Brother MFC-490CW. It was very easy to get onto my network and to have our computers to recognize it. The printer can do wired OR wireless, it can't do both at once though. It also has a fax machine. I don't use it as a photo printer though, for that I'll go down to Costco and print off the photos. We've had the printer for over a year and changed the ink once!!! We don't use it everyday so YMMV.
