What would be the printer to get, that would be the easiest for set up?
If it's close to your router, you could get one that is "network ready" meaning it can be connected by ethernet into your router. Windows 7 and Macs do a pretty good job finding such printers automatically without the user having to tweak too many settings. Windows XP can be a little more challenging as you have to manually set up the printer connection.
It depends on what you want the printer to do. I prefer laser printers and rarely require color. Although it was discontinued earlier this year, something like the Lexmark E120n works well for a shared printer at home and only costs about $150. It has an ethernet port on the back.

Hmm. Network ready. That sounds like what I need. I don't understand much about all this, so ease of installation is crucial.
I have Windows 7 as an operating system, so hopefully I could pick one up that would be easy enough to get up and running.

Yea, I do need color from time to time. Kids school reports, etc. Occasionally I'll even print out a photo or two on photo paper.

Scan, that would be nice also.
I'd look at a network color laser. They've come down in price and size a lot in the past few years and are much faster and cheaper to operate than an inkjet. They do have color lasers with a scanner on top but they're quite a bit bigger and probably more expensive so maybe you can get an inexpensive flatbed scanner and connect it to one PC if you don't need it accessible on the network.
I just bought an HP D110 wireless all-in-one for my son to use at college. It connects wirelessly to the router. Then you can print directly to it using your wireless network.
I paid $80 for the V515 from Dell wireless printer.
It rocks.
