The cable does give me 100 Mbps and I thought the router was messed up when it gave me only 54. So this is normal.

Thanks, John

John,

Of course, those 54mbps or 100mbps speeds are only on your network.

Not download or upload to the internet.

So 54 or 100 doesn't make downloading a video any faster? Some times I will get a video that takes it seams forever to download.

Your download speed is dependent on a LOT of things outside your local network that you cannot control.
There are guys here besides me who can build a longer list than I can of hurdles that video may have to jump to get to you.

Your ISP may only be delivering 5 or 6 mbps, or less.

The server where you get the video may have issues.

If you are on a cable broadband provider, you can drop speed because everyone on your street is sharing the bandwidth. If your neighbor kids are continually downloading and clogging the cable, you will be slower.

On a typical day I can go as low as 5 or 6 mbps with TWC Roadrunner, but this morning on a holiday weekend, I clocked as high as 27.75 mbps when I just did a Speedtest with an Atlanta server.
Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test
Jumped to another city, and got 16.75mbps.

So, if the server you are accessing has high traffic, or your local provider has high traffic, you may not see the speed you want.

And, there may be configuration settings in your router that will allow faster download speeds, but I wouldn't be helpful there.

Additional to what Mike Jaquish said:

Porn downloads are often very slow!

Okay, relax just a bad joke!

On a slightly more serious note, do your neighbors act kinda guilty when they run into you?

Hint: "free wi-fi service".
