I haven't read too much about laptops which can be used outdoors but I would think that capability would be out there and getting affordable with new technologies (LED or something like it?). I worked on the E2-D glass cockpit and I think those cockpit displays were capable of being very bright but not sure of the technology and it was probably very expensive. Also, the displays would have to be efficient considering battery use.
Anyone have any suggestions or is this capability just not happening yet?
Transflective LCD screen. They exist already (like in the Panasonic Toughbooks), but are expensive.
My old Dell Axim PDA must have had that. It was the last PDA/smartphone I could easily read in daylight.
