Every time I open a file from CD it opens in notepad and I need to change that. I am trying to run the launch to install windows 7 upgrade. I don't know how to get this done. I tried install or launch option and same thing, it opens a notepad file with HTML. Appreciate any help!

Right click and "Open with..."

However sounds like your opening a HTML file that probably contains directions.

Goes to notepad. Trying to get launchtua to run and it only opens into notepad. I've right clicked, opened as administrator and everything I can think of but I still get it opening in HTML in notepad.

That file is probably a HTML file with directions, open it with your browser.

Let me clarify, it's common to have a file with directions. For example install.html is used by many applications but it won't install the application. It will however have directions that can be viewed as a web page.

What operating system do you have currently?
What do you see when you do: START > RUN > cmd > OK > path > ENTER ? if you get the command line to display environment variables, then look for the line that reads "PATHEXT=" to see if .EXE file extension is listed or not.

Also open registry editor (START > RUN > regedit > OK) and browse to this location to see what is listed:

Quote:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe\PersistentHandler
and
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile
If you have XP/Vista/7, you could download the attached zip file, extract it and the double-click on the registry file to merge it to your system which would fix if the related file association was the cause. As usual, I recommend making a backup of at least the entire HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT by right-clicking on the hive and then selecting "Export" before merging the registry patch...just in case.
