I have McAfee on my computer and noticed that it is running slow, have run the anti-virus yet nothing came up, talked to a tech, they said it was probably a virus. So does anyone have any other anti-virus that is more effective? I have heard some good things about Kaspersky Anti-virus but wanted some input from others before I purchase it.

Don't buy an antivirus. Get Microsoft Security Essentials for free. Its very likely that McCrappy is the cause of your slow computer. You can also get Malwarebytes for free to scan for spyware.

If you really, really hate Microsoft so much that you don't even want something they give away for free, you can substitute AVG Free for MSE.

I use Avira AntiVir on all my computers and have never had an issue. It takes very little system resources to run, does a good job and best of all it's free.

As others have said, the McAfee itself may be causing the slow down. It's a very resource hungry application.

Edit: PS, don't forget an anti-spyware program. I personally use SpyBot Search and Destroy. It's free, pretty robust and doesn't take up many resources.

Also if you do run into something either one of those can't catch a quick search will usually give you the answer on how to get rid of it or another program to use. Over many years of running these two programs, there have been exactly 2 things my PC picked up that necessitated me going to another resource to remove.

Have you looked into all the progs that are run when windows boot up? You know, all the progs that must do their et phone home to check for updates/whatever.

Look at your tasklist, see any progs taking up CPU time, they could be a cause....

Memory, how much do you have free? How about swap space? How much swap space is allocated?

If it's the network check your network statistics, look and use command line tool "netstat", check for input and output errors, check for CRC errors, check for duplex errors (very bad that should always be 0 (zero).

From reading these replies as well as replies on the anti-virus polls it seems as though alot really trust MSE, I am going to have to look into this more intensly, my daughter's boyfriend who knows quite a bit about computers uses Kaspersky, I have experience with AVG, Norton and McAffee.
