That's how I've bought most of my Macs in the past 10 years... as refurbs from the online Apple Store. I've never had a problem or received a defective unit buying them that way, and the savings is significant.

BTW, there's a difference between a reseller refurb and a manufacturer's refurb. You want the latter, which is sold by Apple.

Excellent point / advice, Bowie.

Quite often the refurbished computers at Apple.com are merely "leftovers" from the previous offerings. Unless there is a feature in the "newest and greatest," the previous models are far superior to any PC at a very competitive price plus a full Apple Warranty.

My 17" MacBook Pro was a refurbished model and it has been absolutely flawless for more than 4 years. I often think about a new one but this one keeps chugging along smoother and faster than I can think so why?

Yeah I have a six and a half year old Refurbished PowerMac G5 1.8 GHz Dual Processor. 6.5 GB of RAM 2 x 500 GB hard drives Running 10.5 Leopard.

I also have a two and a half year old Refurbished Black Macbook 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4 GB of RAM 250 GB 7200rpm hard drive Running 10.6 Snow Leopard.

The G5 has only had one problem. A hard drive that failed (non Apple installed hardware). I replaced it and recover all my data. The MacBook has never had an issue.

Pretty much everything you need to know about them is in this FAQ:

Apple Certified Refurbished Products
