I downloaded Lubuntu today, which features the LXDE desktop environment. I've wanted to try it for awhile now. The last couple of years has seen me really gravitating to the most basic desktop environments. KDE and Gnome are just too bloated anymore. I guess they try to be all things to all people, when all I want is simple. I used to really like Window Maker back in the day, but the last stable release was in 2005.
I've been wanting to go the FreeBSD route as well, but I need another machine and more time.

LXDE is on my radar and I'm awaiting till more refinements are made to it as there's plenty of potential with that nice desktop.
KDE and GNOME is bloated for Linux but not compared with Windows Vista and 7 IMHO.
Yeah, to me simple is better (in my older age - lol!) without the 3D, plasma and other eye candy. But I can afford to have all of them being I have other desktop computers to install them on. But to some it also depends on the "computer horsepower" one has available that may necessitate a lighter desktop.
Did you hear that Ubuntu is dropping Gnome in favor of Unity desktop environment with their next release? That kind of irks me, because Ubuntu is my fallback distro -- the one I always go back to when I'm bored of trying other distros. I'm not really that fond of Unity desktop. It's meant for netbooks not larger screens. I tried it the other day on Ubuntu and it just felt off.

I'm running dual boot with 64 bit XP Pro and Ubuntu at the moment.
