It's an older model and is pretty expensive compared to newer ones. The M500 is about half the price of the M4 (at least on the places I usually look).
I have both a M4 and an M500 in my current rig (256 and 240 GB), and a 120 GB M500 in my HTPC, and have been fairly happy with all three drives. The M4 had some known issues as a boot drive (that probably have as much to do with the SATA ports / controller as the drive itself), but those were patched with a firmware upgrade.
The M500 has been rock solid as the boot drive in both machines for over a year now.
The Crucial M4 is different. The M.2 SSD drive looks like this:
Its attached directly to the MOB and loads 3-4 times faster than standard SSD drives like the M4, Samsung EVO, etc. Many of the new MOBs have dedicated slots especially for the M.2. My board ASUS Maximus VII allows for this sized M.2 and Im thinking of installing one just for my operating system.

Got you .... This is PCI-e or SATA III based M.2 (your original post / title says M.4, so I thought it was just a misprint).
There are still several gotchas with this format, so it's not something I've decided to do on my next build yet. The main issue is drive price for the PCI-e variants (the only ones that have a performance boost).
Aw man. Cant believe I made such a goof in the thread title. That's a major goof.
