I don't think you can. Maybe adobe premier if it handles quicktime

You can't.
You can try converting it. I believe VLC VIDEO PLAYER can do that. Make it an AVI and then edit it with Windows Movie Maker.

Is there any decent freeware that can convert .mov to say .avi or other formats?

I use zamzar.com. You just upload your file, and then download it converted.

Windows Media Player is a player, not an editor.

Windows Movie Maker might do this. It is included in XP and available for Vista and W7 via Live Essentials (free).
