If you are going to use Open Office you should always save your files as RTF because it will have the most compatibility with other text editors. You could also save it as a DOC which is Microsoft Words format.

Saving it with an ODT extension means whoever you send it to needs to download and install a plug in from Sun before they can view it. Some people may not be willing to do it so it's not your best format to use. Plus you will have to explain that if they can't open it to download and install the plug in and provide a link otherwise people will either ignore your e-mail or respond confused once they can't open the file.

Easy solution is to make anything you plan to give someone else a PDF file since that ability is built in to Open Office.
