It sounds like you are using a laptop and the touchpad has developed a mind of its own.
FWIW:
I have a Dell E1705 laptop, and when/if I rest the heel of my hand on the case to type, sometimes I experience the issue the OP is describing.
This would be my right hand, and to the right of the touchpad.
With or without my mouse dongle in the USB.
The OP said they were using a wireless mouse, could they also be using a wireless keyboard? Our conference room PC's at work do funky things like that if the mouse and keyboard batteries are dieing.
Quick way to rule out the mouse or nail down that it is defective is to grab any other USB mouse, plug it into a USB port and repeat the actions that cause your mouse to go crazy. If the mouse cursor doesn't freak out with the other mouse then your laptop touchpad is shot.

If I did that I would say the original mouse was bad. If the second mouse caused the same reaction I would then look at the touchpad.
I would first make certain the touchpad is turned off before getting excited about any other possibilities.
One of my computers is an older Dell desktop with an attached mouse and my cursor disappears once in awhile. It's there, and it functions. It's just invisible. If I merely refresh or switch to a new window, it comes back in sight.
