Default Security update for SQL Server 2005 Service pack 2 (KB960089)

My computer continues to fail at installing this update. I tried running msconfig and nothing. Any ideas?

If you're getting this error, then you've got MS SQL Server 2005 installed on your machine. Assuming that we're not talking about a database server, then that's not common consumer software - usually only developers have it installed.

There's a bug in the update for KB960089...if you google it you can find out more about it. It boils down to this security fix being superceded by KB955706 (note the snafu in sequence numbers).

Do some googling on both Knowledge Base numbers for a little more background info and then see if KB955706 is already installed on your machine. If it is, then turn off the update for KB960089.

You got your answer up there ^^^

I'm just curious what you expect msconfig to do for you in this circumstance.

Correct, it is not. You need to provide the exact error message if we're to be of any help.

I, too, have this security update for SQL server 2005 SP2 update problem for quite a while, with error codes FF and C0000005. I see from googling that this has been a common problem for severeal years, but I have seen no solution that I can implement. Excuse my laymanship, but if this isn't a common "user" software, can it just be removed? Does that leave me without a server? I'm running Windows 7 and although I sit in front of this box all day long, I am usually content to be ignorant of its inner workings. Any simple help on this?
