Hello, I have an old Dell desktop computer that I haven't used for years (can't remember if it even works, though suspect not since I stuck it in the garage). I figure if I donate it to Goodwill or wherever, someone could eventually get into it and I purchased things online with it using credit cards, probably did my taxes, etc. How do I dispose of it and keep someone from stealing sensitive info? Torch it?
First dig a whole, next through your HDD in the hole, after that take a hammer and smash it to tiny pieces, then when you are done pour gas all over it and light it up . All that is left is to pour cement into the hole and cover it up with dirt and you are done.
A much easier way to to take it with you on a cruise and then when you are in the middle of the ocean through it in.

None of which is remotely realistic, a government grade data wiping utility will get the job done, and that's free, far cheaper than taking a cruise.

Where would I obtain a government grade wiping utility? I guess that's assuming I could get the thing to boot up easily, then hook it up to a monitor/keyboard/mouse, internet, etc. I was thinking of removing the hard drive and just torching it... :-)
throw it in the microwave until it arcs (just for $#!+$ and giggles). The smash it with a hammer and thow the disc back into the microwave until it arcs (just for $#!+$ and giggles, again)
Keep in mind this isn't a 5 minute job, it takes hours. You can take the drive out if the box won't turn on and stick it in another PC to do the wipe, just make sure you disconnect the good drive so you don't accidentally wipe the wrong drive.

Then deep six it or throw it in a dumpster.
Why do people think you can smash things made of metal to pieces with a hammer?
I know some pc techs that nuke the old HDDs of there clients. Fun to watch the different ways you can destroy those devices. I think one way is to use some strong magnet brick like thing on it that scrambles the 1s and 0s and such.
