Default Seagate buys Samsung

Not long after Western Digital aquired Hitachi, don't know if they're going to keep the Samsung name though.

Seagate buys Samsung's hard drive business for $1.375 billion

The collapse of HD pricing power has lead to industry consolidation that will reduce competition and help manufacturers put a profitable floor into the market.
Probably not great news for consumers.

I hate Seagate... I hope they don't ruin Samsung quality.

There goes the competition ... again.

So now we'll be down to Seagate, Western Digital, and Toshiba. Lets hope that Seagate adopts Samsung's manufacturing this time, and NOT extend what they learned from Maxtor. Yeah, Samsung's not perfect either, but at least they're better than what comes out of Seagate these days.

Ya know there's always gonna be someone with an irrational hatred of something being discussed.

I personally use my own custom built hard drive as I don't care for any of the vendor!

Just kidding. On a more serious note, I was never a huge fan of Samsung drives. Seagate was OK but I typically preferred Fujitsu, Maxtor and later on WD drives. I have been using WD's Raptor drives in RAID-0 configuration since the early 2000s. Never had any issues. Samsung drives were never that good, at least performance wise.

What about LaCie? I was told they have a superior product, so that's what I bought.

LaCie uses Seagate drives (at least mine did). It, of course, died. Most if not all external hard drive manufacturers make their own cases and interfaces, and use either Seagate or Western Digital hard drives.

Look at their newer ones ... their higher density platters means higher transfer rates too.

The thing is, WD drives don't play well in RAID situations, and Seagate can be miss or hit. That leaves Hitachi and Samsung, both of which do work fine in RAIDs.
