I recieved an email from McAfee that my subscription was auto renewed at a cost of $89.99. I knew I hadn't paid nearly that much when I initially bought the subscription last year.
I looked online and found that the going rate is $59.99. They even show the original price as $89.99 and that they're offering a $30.00 discount. Hmmm....
So, I called McAfee and told them I was going to cancel my subcription and repurchase it online at the lower rate. Lo and behold, they told me since I was a "valued" (yeah right) customer and they wanted to retain my business they could offered me a $45.00 discount. My cost ended up being $44.99.
The rep asked me if I wanted to cancel the auto renewal function and I declined. I have 60 days to cancel after the auto renewal and hopefully can save as much next year by just picking up the phone.
Well they come pre-loaded on new PCs, get your initial info and are "free" for a term, then automatically renew since they are already there. If you don't take the time to try and remove them, which can be a hassle, and find a free alternative, you can end up paying big time.

Does the PC come preloaded with your credit card info? They shouldn't ask for credit card info for the free period. If so, how can they charge you if they don't know your payment info? If they asked for my credit card for the initial 'free' period, that will be my sign that they're up to something.

That's what I was going to say. They certainly do NOT ask for Credit Card info when you set up your PC for the first time.
I also agree that if you choose to spend your money on a product that's fine. Who am I to tell you how to spend your money?
But also agree there are qualty free alternatives, including Microsoft's very own product.
