I have 5k to spend on a new computer... should I buy a desktop + laptop or should I go all out for a desktop? I want to play Diablo 3 and I may be traveling so I think a desktop/laptop combo would be better... if I go the desktop/laptop line, what video card should the computers be? Thanks...
If I had 5K I'd spend $2500 on a custom 17" Dell laptop with built in tv tuner, 1920 x 1080 17" screen, and an auto power adapter. I could build a good gaming desktop with $2500 too.
Here's what I spec'd for $1650... a low power gaming / HTPC rig -- already bought some parts on sale...

For you, you can get a better case, 16 gb of ddr3, an SLI mb, and sli two 570's with an 800W Gold P.S.
With that budget you can build anything you want and still have a ton left over for a good laptop. If building isn't your thing, check out the Cyberpower site and play with their various configurations. The only thing I would note with them is that you should research all of the various options independently to see what you want to go with and what works best. They give you a ton of choices, but they don't always fully vet every option.
I just wanted to clue in on the fact that you said you are mainly building this for Diablo 3. Blizzard games are purpose built to work on the widest range of platforms possible. Chances are the game won't be pushing any bounds like a Crysis or similar game would. Most sites are saying that the requirements will be very similar to Starcraft II, which is easily run at max settings on mid-range systems like an i5 or equivalent AMD with 4GB RAM and something like a Radeon 5770.
Bascially you don't need an absolute, top-of-the-line, best benchmark score at the LAN party, rig to play that game.
Here's a quote from the developers:
Quote:
Jay Wilson: Currently we have no plans for specific DirectX 10 support. Right now are running a DirectX 9, and we run on a pretty broad range of systems, really fast. Overall, across-the-board Blizzard’s goal is that all of our games support a broad range of systems. We don’t jump up the system specs in any grand way. We have no intentions of being a high-end game, and certainly no intentions of being an exclusive DirectX 10 game at this time.
We don’t exactly know what the system specs are yet, but we’ll try to keep them pretty low. We make a lot of decisions about what we do and do not put into our graphics, in order to keep the game running fast. One of the reasons why we talk a lot about art style, and how we focus a lot on art style, stylization of art over… when we do that it allows us to have a good looking game without falling back on technology, our technology does not have to carry us when we have such great art in the game.
I would venture you could probably spend less than $1k on a computer (including a monitor) and still have no problem running Diablo 3. If you still want the "best of the best", than it's your money have at it, but you won't need it for that game.
