I took 2 pics of my new computer, put the CF card in the new floppy / memory card reader... turns out the CF reader is no good and corrupts the CF card... forcing me to reformat it. Used my other computer and another CF card reader to reformat it... CF card still works. But I blew away the photos on the CF card by reformatting it after it got corrupted.

Is there any chance of recovering the photos that were on it before the corruption and reformat? Know of any freeware that'll do the trick?

After reformatting? nope.

Well maybe if you bring it to one of the data recovery companies they might but it will cost a fortune.

Not so fast, according to the makers of this program they say it can be done. The free download will at least show they there, but but one has to pay for the program to enable recovery.

Formatting a CF card is different than a drive, it doesn't write a pattern throughout the entire storage area, as a full format on magnetic media does.

When you reformat this does not necessarily overwrite the data, where you might have trouble for example is formatting a hard drive (or other storage medium) and then reinstalling windows or writing other data. In this case you could potentially overwrite the files you want to recover, that's why it's essential if you accidentally "delete" a file from the trash bin or a card like this you'll want to stop using the drive or card. Having said that I recovered every file off my Sister-in-law's hard drive after full format and fresh windows install because the install is written to the first part of the drive where it originally resided. In some cases multiple copies of the same file were recovered that was opened and saved a lot.

There's plenty of software out there available for recovering data. Like this free product:

PC Inspector - kostenlose Software fr die Datenrettung von CONVAR - Die Datenretter.

I'm sure they would be willing to take your money but these services are better suited for recovery of data on drives that no longer work or have been physically damaged.
