$300 is pretty much bottom of the line. Newegg's cheapest desktop with Windows is a $309.99 Compaq: Newegg.com - COMPAQ Presario CQ5700F (BV516AA#ABA) Desktop PC Athlon II 170u(2.0GHz) 2GB DDR3 500GB HDD Capacity ATI Radeon 3000 IGP Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. It'll work, just don't be too upset or surprised when it craps out in a year.

Dell OptiPlex GX520 Pentium D 945 3.4GHz 1GB 80GB CDRW/DVD XP Professional Mini-Tower Dell OptiPlex GX520MT OptiPlex GX520 Mini-Tower

Cheap enough that you could add a larger hard drive and more RAM, assuming you can live with Windows XP.

My experience with $300 computers has been good so far, no complaints. I've had my Compaq Presario for about 3 and a half years now and have had no problems with it. I'm going to upgrade it soon from 1 to 2 Gb memory.

The Dell Inspiron has been here a little over 2 years. No problems with it. It's my favorite and it came with 2 Gb memory.

I got both these computers on sale at Walmart. They are fine for the basic things we use them at home for.

Next time I'm looking for one, I'm going to check out the Dell store in addition to Newegg and my local Walmart.

p.s. The Dell came with a monitor, the Compaq did not.

Have you checked craigslist for used machines? You'll get more bang for your buck that way.

I hate setting up these super cheap $300 PCs for people. They're dog slow out of the box (even after all the bloatware is taken away)....I guess whatever boats your float. I'd rather spend twice as much and get 4x the use out of them. I still have the first PC I ever built (11 years ago) and although it is pretty tired and slow now, it has served me very well.

Just remember, SIZE does not equal QUALITY or SPEED.

While I won't say it's a killer deal, this meets your price:
Dell Inspiron 560 Intel Celeron 450 2.2GHz Desktop Computer (2GB/500GB) $279 Deal - Reviews and Compare Prices

That said, I HIGHLY recommend getting the dual core instead:
PassMark CPU Lookup
PassMark CPU Lookup

If you can stretch your budget, however, just opt for this and sell off the 22" LCD. You'll still net out a $300 PC, but with the faster processor and more memory already.

Go to Goodwill and you will find a functional desktop for a lot less than $300.
