Howdy all.

Long story short....

Selected image, added layer & selected gradient tool but for some reason the entire image goes away! I've tried everything and can't figure out what I did wrong, because it used to work.

My settings are Linear gradient in Normal Mode and 100% opacity.

any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

I really only use photoshop for color correction and sharpening, but maybe turn down your opacity or use a duplicate layer instead of a new layer?

What are you trying to do?

try using "multiply" or "screen" then adjust opacity.

Not sure what you are trying to do.

Are you creating a selection on the layer? Or just applying the gradient to the entire layer? If you apply the gradient to the entire layer, it will cover the entire layer.

you can also use layer masks or the gradient tool effect in layers

Default Thanks !!!

First off all thanks for all the feedback. Ya'll are so fabulous I don't even think ya'll know how much I appreciate the help I get from you guys.

Regarding what I'm trying to do,
truthfully I was just brushing up on the tool for some advertising I'm working on (small biz owner). I learned this in school but because I don't use it enough, am struggling to remember a lot of things.

I remembered adding a layer mask and how to use the gradient tool but I think I had certain preferences saved because no matter what I did, I couldn't keep it from deleting the whole layer. I had to walk away from it for a few hours and when I went back, guess what? It's working.....

Thing is I don't know what the hell I did to fix it !!!

Needless to say I'll be subscribing to this forum!!!

Thanks again for the added help!

Use gradient on an existing layer and you'll mask it, or make it go invisible. Use gradient on a new (normal) layer and you'll have a gradient of color overlay.
