He gloated he had not saved files just "run" them, please help!

Reason: missed words
Googling "Data recovery services" shows several companies that might help you recover the data. That's assuming that the data was there to begin with. What did he use to make the recording? Camcorder, cell phone? If the device uses SD cards, you might be able to recover the recording from there also.

But the device or memory card must not be used for anything until it can be examined by someone that knows what they are doing. I suggest talking to local law enforcement.
I'm not a camera / photographer person so i don't know what he used to take the pictures but i believe that my friend downloaded the pictures from a c.d..
It was a number of years ago and he downloaded the pics onto my computer and i wasn't really paying attention.
So this is probably a stupid question but would "system restore" do it? or undo it i should say.
he used a spy pen, when was caught he destroyed the pen, he has admitted to taking at least 3 videos but only ran them. the police surfaced scaned computer and said lots of porn on it but because my eldest daughter will not press charges they are not prepared to do an "in-depth" search!
Assuming a spy pen is some device with its own storage, it looks like a USB drive to the PC, and he just played them directly from the spy pen, the data is not on the PC's hard drive to be retrieved. Some file names may be cached in the registry, but that's about it.

Found this and a number of similar items using Google.
I'd say you're right. I bet they were played directly from the pen. Doubtful anything was copied to the drive. If it was a search with something like this is the way to try to retrieve the data.

If there was a lot of porn on the hard drive a search for possible child porn might interest the authorities.
i posted on the wrong thread .... one that has a title similar to mine.
