Skype Protocol Cracked -- InformationWeek
Quote:
A researcher named Efim Bushmanov claims to have reverse engineered the Skype protocol.
"My aim is to make Skype open source," he said in a blog post on Thursday, which included links to download executable files compatible with Skype versions 1.4, 3.8, and 4.1, plus IDA Pro disassembly database files, and source code.
Very interesting article. After Windows purchased Skype, I wondered about M$ dropping support for Linux, Mac, and Android. If open source Skype clients begin to show up, then non-Windows users won't have to worry anymore.

Doesn't Linux already have Skype? I believe Skype is in the repository.

Yes. But nothing is stopping M$ from dropping support for Linux completely. It can range from not providing updates to the Linux version all the way up to blocking Linux clients from connecting. My hunch is that the Windows version will keep getting updates and new features while the Linux version will be stuck at 2.2 beta forever. Skype's Linux version has always lagged behind the Win version and it's not going to get any better with Redmond in charge.

I think that Microsoft will leave Skype for the consumer market as it is right now. But will take the technology to the enterprise market and bundle it in with their enterprise collaboration tools.

I wonder if I will be able to use my MSN ID with the Skype messenger in the future. Just like one can use an AOL ID on ICQ, or the other way round, if I am not mistaken
