Hi,
In desperate need of a new laptop, the two we have are 5 and 3 years old and are slow, crash all of the time, and have viruses I think. We're not very computer savvy at all, so as much help as possible would be appreciated. Thank you.

Truthfully, you'd be better off browsing/searching this forum for the information. This question has been answered repeatedly in the last month or so.

Thinkpad. Lenovo has several under $600, although they will be pretty barebone.

I like the Toshiba Satellites (around the $450 price point) but the built-in speakers are pretty weak so plan on an external set. Also, the fans tend to be noisy so some type of cooling pad is helpful.

I haven't owned a Toshiba in years, but the last one I had was a good machine.

My sister and her family currently have several of them, and both of my parents have Satellites as well. They have been problem free for the most part.

I actually replaced a Toshiba recently and the only problem was that the DC power pickup kept coming apart. I actually gave the Toshiba to my mom and she likes it fine mainly because it stays in one place where the power pickup won't move.
