Wifes' puter is taking a long time to close. It had earlier prompted me to let it do some downloads from Microsoft. After that was done, it was in the process of closing but it is taking a long time. Wife said if it doesn't close before she goes to bed, she is going to to a hard shutdown.

So, what is the verdict?

Not knowing what version of Windows makes it tougher, but I can tell you that Mrs. Tek and I both had huge updates recently for Win 7. She left hers running when she went to bed and it had shut down by the time she got up.

Vista? I've seen it take a long time to shut down. I know its probably doing updates, but it doesn't say so. Is there still hard drive activity?

Yeah it is 7. I guess I'll advise her to go to bed and let it do its thing.

That may take care of it shutting down, but don't be overly surprised if it won't boot again.

I was going to say the same thing. That's close to the single worst thing you can do to a PC

Ok, it is still saying that it is shutting down. I hate to do a hard shutdown, but I don't see what else to do. It's been sitting there from yesterday afternoon, to 6:10 pm.

I guess it's either got the download or it didn't work and it'll try to do another download.
