Today I booted my friend's XP computer and I got a box saying "Updates from HP is unable to access its data directory." I clicked OK. (This is an HP computer with XP, and also an HP printer.)

I searched for details and found that this happens on IE 7 and you're supposed to turn off the phishing filter. Unfortunately this computer had IE 8. Which doesn't have a phishing filter, although there was a checkbox for SmartScreen Filter which is similar, but it was off.

In Add/Remove Programs, I found a program called HP Updates and removed it. I then went to MSConfig / Start tab and saw a program called Updates from HP. Which is funny since I'd never seen it there before. It was listed as Common Startup which means I could go to Windows Explorer/All Users/Startup and I deleted it there.
