If you have an older XP computer with a PS2 mouse, and you change to a USB mouse by a different brand - should it automatically work right, or do you have to install software or tweak something?

They are mostly plug and play unless you have some exotic gaming mouse.
If there is specific drivers needed for you new mouse just leave your PS2 mouse hooked
up while you set up the new mouse.

To expand on what JustMe said, many mice these days (not just gaming mice) have special buttons that can be assigned certain tasks. For instance, the scroll wheel on my Logitech can be "clicked" to the left or the right. I have to install software from Logitech to assign tasks to those clicks. I use mine to navigate web pages back and forth.

However, basic mouse functions i.e. left click, right click, etc. work fine without any special software.

and as JustMe said you can have 2, 3 4 mice all hooked up at the same time and they will all work. So leaves the PS2 one in until you know the USB one works.

Should still work, you just won't have any of the non standard features until you install the drivers.

Generally yes but with some mice and keyboards you need to install drivers to activate non standard features on them.
