On an XP computer, I might have to switch from the PS2 mouse to a new USB mouse.

(1) I should remove the old and add the new mouse when the power is off, right?

(2) This computer has two accounts. You have to select an account at startup, using the mouse. The first time I startup with the new mouse, will it be activated in time, so that I can select an account?

(3) The first time you use a new USB mouse (and it's plug and play), does Windows run some little program because there's a new mouse, or does the mouse simply work right away?

Is USB enabled in the BIOS?

What you should do is bring the system down, unplug the old mouse and plug the new mouse in...

The new mouse should be operational at the account startup screen.

I'm sorry if it seemed repetitive, but it was bugging my mind.

Another question was, if the computer is old (late 2005, XP) and the mouse is really new, does that increase the chance there will be a compatibility problem?

It should just work, just plug it in. In fact, you can have as many mice plugged in as you want (makes for a great prank at the office).

Why are there two threads going on about this, I think one is plenty for such a simple question.
