A friend brought over an iPod that they can't get working and wanted to see if I could restore it. It gets "stuck" with a white screen and at first I thought iTunes was going to restore it. It said it needed to be restored and I started the process....
Well, the software downloaded, extracted, and during install it came up that the "iPod could not be restored due to an unknown error(1600)."
Can anyone give me some advice?
Per my friend the iPod has never been "jailbroken", it just started freezing up.
There is an easy and quick fix for this. The downside is that it is Windows only (Mac version is in the work), and that it only works for iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iTouch 1G and iTouch 2G. In other words, no iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G support.
iREB (iTunes Restore Error Bypasser) is a neat little tool that will help you fix these errors. Step 1: Download iREB from here (http://ih8sn0w.com/index.php/products/view/ireb.snow - broken link). Step 2: Launch iTunes and put your iPhone in DFU mode (hold power and home button together for 10 seconds; release the power button and keep holding the home button until iTunes tells you it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. Step 3: Once iTunes has detected your iPhone in recovery mode, close iTunes and launch iREB. Step 4: Select your device and wait for the screen to go red or white. Step 5: Launch iTunes and hold the SHIFT key while clicking on restore. A window will open. From there just browse for the custom firmware you want to restore to.
You should be good to go. iTunes should restore your iPhone to the desired firmware without giving you any error.

You're right, google is our friend (I hate that phrase)....careful reading is also our friend. I don't have an iPhone, but thanks for posting an article I already read.
Not only is it (the article) not regarding an iPod (though the OS is admittedly probably the same except the 8GB iPod I THINK came out before any iPhones), it also seemed to apply to devices that had been "jailbroken". I'm trying to see if there's a fix without downloading some possible sketchy software. I sure don't want to put my laptop in any danger.
Have you tried, or can you get the iPod into DFU mode (Device Firmware Upgrade mode)? Perhaps if you can do that, iTunes can then restore its firmware.

I'm not sure what DFU is and I'm also not sure how to get it to that mode.
Thanks again, oddstray. I had read both of these and tried the first. The second doesn't really apply since it is one of the touch-screen iPods/iTouches. I'll keep plugging along....there must be a way to fix this thing!

I wouldn't say that. Stuff does break... even iPods....
