The e-ink display technology is an incredible leap forward in the realm of display technologies. The backlight is eliminated, almost all of our use is in either daylight or artificial light so this makes perfect sense (when is the last time you used your notebook in a place where it was pitch black and there was no other light at all...almost never right?), and for those very rare instances where we really need to use the display in pitch blackness we could always use a "frontlight" (like the Kindle lighted case), the cool thing is that most places have lighting anyway - buses/planes have reading lights when it's dark, so a backlight (which LCD displays use) is a huge and unnecessary waste of battery energy and in most cases it's just not necessary.
Here is a great explanation on e-ink and also on the new triton color e-ink displays:
Another incredible thing about e-ink is that once the shape is rendered, the ink can just sit there forever without the need for power to keep it going. This is absolutely brilliant.
