Windows 8....
Looks like it must have won the 4th grade project design.
Ugly.
I'd say Apple just gained some market share.

You're posting those pictures out of context. You have to pay attention to how the Windows 8 interface works. I liked it on their phones and thing it's pretty genius and will work well on the desktop platform. Also, Microsoft has stated that you can run the standard Windows interface and the new interface side by side, or just one or the other at a time.

Do windows users really need to be told this is where you START? Hey I guess if you like crayons and a big CLOCK, Win 8 is the OS for you.
I think Windows 95 looked better, at least it didn't insult you.

Hey Mach, go back and read NJBest's post:

I thought we had stopped with these childish Windows bashing threads/comments...

I am just wondering why they would invent such a childish UI.

Yup. It's almost like Ubuntu's Unity.
I don't mind the interface at all.
Again, people are so used to computers being these immovable objects. MS is taking a stab at Apple saying that Apple's interface is behind the times. Sure MS is taking a risk, but I think the way we're working with computers and the UI's were used to are changing for the better; especially for the masses.
Windows 8 Slate Hands On: It's Fantastic. (But Don't Sell Your iPad.)
Now this works very well as a tablet OS and but I think MS is trying to capitalize on these sorts of UIs to be used in the mainstream on desktops.
Think about it: People want simple stuff and there's nothing more simple than huge tiles stating what they are. E-mail, Word, Internet. What else do you need?
Apples icons are getting a bit stale, and if MSs gamble takes off we're going to see some real creativity come out of both camps.
The only thing MS doesn't have is Apple's closed and protected nature. Especially when it comes to apps, compatibly with themes from 3rd parties and hardware requirements. I'd like to see how a virus program looks and works within this UI.
(In fact I'm d/ling right now )

I've always hated that. And they finally get away from it with Windows 7/Vista .... and now we are going back to it? *sigh....
I also hate that they are going back to numbers. Vista was a cool name. 7? 8?
Yuck...

Guess their marketing surveys show modern Americans respond best to childish things due to their childish mentalities.
Look at the example you posted of the Apple screen, colorful cutesy little eye catching pictures, the gray background to sooth a child's mental anxiety...

The concept is interesting... but no. Their apps-based UI look like doo-doo. Give me my Rainmeter and ObjectDock anyday.

Meh. It's no different than OSX. A name is just a name.
