Acer on Monday announced plans to buy rival Gateway (GTW) for $710 million, a deal that will make the Taiwanese company the world's No. 3 PC-maker.
Acer plans to pay $1.90 for each Gateway share, a substantial premium over the stock's Friday closing price of $1.21. But it's far less than Gateway's peak share price of more than $80 in 1999.

The deal, which has been approved by the boards of both companies, gives Acer a long-desired foothold in the U.S. consumer marker, says Samir Bhavnani, tech analyst at researcher Current Analysis West. And it allows struggling Gateway to live on, since Acer has expressed interest in preserving the Gateway brand name, he says.

Ive had good and bad experiencecs with both. Ive had both said laptops and desktops in my posession. Im currently using a Gateway laptop and love it. The problem I see here is less competition = lower standards.

That's sad. Compaq offered $7 Billion in 1999 and they refused. Now they're selling for $710 million. To Acer. How sad.

Gateway sucks to begin with, as I am the proud owner of a $2,000 dollar POS from them. The product sucks, support sucks etc. All of the reviews I have read regarding Acer are poor at best. So this merger is just the nail in the coffin for both companies for my money. I would not buy either brand.

Hrm... would Yugo buying K-mart be a simile to this news, or would that be a metaphor?

I've personally always dreamed of installing an Acer and Gateway machine in my Yugo. If I ever get around to this I'll buy some nice spinners for it as well.

I actually laughed out loud when I read the initial post... it's not often you see the bottom of the barrel trying to merge...

I have had Gateway desktops for years. Have two at home. Husband uses one, and I the other. Happy to say tht I have never, ever had any problems with either of them. Oldest is 8 years, newest is 4 years old. Have installed additional memory in my newest and plan to use it as long as possible. Whenever I called to ask any questions, have always had prompt and thorough assistance from Gateway.

This just stinks that they are going to be Acer. Now I'll just have to use my MacBookPro all of the time when these go bad and maybe even replace them with the new iMac.

Acers are maybe ok, but if you set a password and "forget" you must mail it inw/ $125 and let them rip it out w/ a claw-hammer. Also, the ac adapter gets hot and melts the cord, rendering the laptop lifeless. $750 purchase plus $500 to get past c-moss password =$1250 for a three G memory Centrino Duo laptop. Now it works well, but I have mixed feelings about it.
