I haven't been able to find an answer to what seems like a simple question and I've done numerous Google and Forum searches on it.

If I am doing something like .. downloading a torrent (Which I would Never, Ever do) .. and I don't have any browser windows open and shut my monitor off .. will my video card stop running?

I just don't want the card running if it isn't being used.

Make sense?

It only turns off when you put it into hibernation mode (which doesn't turn it all the way off) or you shut down the PC.

Modern cards will throttle its power consumption down when idling, though.

No...

If it did make sense why haven't the manufacturers have an option to do it?

NFN do you have a dial-up modem?

If the monitor is turned off what power will the video card throttle down?

You used to be able to save a decent amount of power by selecting the "turn off monitor" option or whatever it's called in power settings with older video cards (the one's with VGA ports). This used to shut down the RAMDAC. However, modern video cards often don't have VGA ports, thus don't have RAMDAC.

You can't really turn off the video card... unless we're talking about nVidia Optimus.

Turning off the monitor isn't the trigger. The trigger is minimal screen activity.

As the OP says, he already has the monitor turned off so what additional power is turned off on the video card?

The cores are dynamically turned off.

The video card never shuts down as long as the PC is booted and running. Settings allow for video output to be cut off after a certain amount of time if you so choose, but the card is still powered up.

What difference does it make if the video card shuts off or not if the PC is running anyway? What's the point?
