Seagate, Western Digital slash hard drive warranties

Apparently "how to best meld features and service to meet customers’ needs" means giving them less for their money.

I'm surprised they waited this long, quality has been down for a while, must be costing them too much to replace their defectives.

I agree with you on that.

I still try to find single-platter drives, just to keep the chances down. Cost to gig isn't nearly as good as high capacity units, but I don't use them for storage. I have 2tb drives for that, in RAID5.

At least WD didn't cut the warranty on the better drives. I only use the "Black" series, and for now at least, they're keeping the 5 yr warranty on them.

Reducing warranty lengths may allow them to recognize revenue more quickly (GAAP). This gives them a one-time temporary bump in revenue, to smooth over the drop due to the flooding in Thailand.
