I have Norton Security Suite 2011 installed on my laptop. I run a full scan once a month, quick scan at least once a week, and update Norton regularly.

My question: do I need additional spyware and/or malware programs or does Norton do a better than average job on spyware and/or malware.

I've been told that the spyware and malware programs "go deeper than Norton" to eliminate any issues?

For day-to-day protection, you only want one A/V running at any one time. Bad things can happen when you run multiple active A/Vs.

I always use Microsoft Security Essentials as my active A/V, and Malwarebytes and Superantispyware, they do not run all the time. They are run once, use once programs (unless you upgrade MWB, it has an active scanner for paid users now).

I downloaded Malewarebytes and ran it; so it doesn't run in the background all the time?

I will also download Superantispyware and run it once; it also doesn't run in the background all the time?

You like Microsoft Security Essentials better than Norton? Norton was advised by my computer tech.

Unless you buy the paid version of Malwarebytes & SAS they do not have realtime monitoring.

Which is the best AV has long been debated, what your computer guy likes won't be the same as what another likes. No matter what you use it's not up to the task of protecting your computer from the latest nasties that are running around the web. A free AV app like MSE and a good dose of common sense will go a long way to keeping you safe.

Thank you so much for the really good information, just what I was looking for.

I'll download the Microsoft Security on our 2nd computer along with Malawarebytes.

Again, thank you!

Merry Christmas

IMHO, no longer useful as other tools have surpassed it.

ComboFix

These are needed after you've been infected. You might want to have a recent version of them on a flash drive. HijackThis doesn't repair anything, it is used to generate reports so that other people can advise you on how to proceed with malware removal. It would also be useful to have a couple of rootkit removal tools, like Kapersky's TDSSKiller, and WebRoot's AntiZeroAccess.

That article was written two and a half years ago, that's why the list is out of date. When it was written the list was probably good.

I use Norton Internet Security Suite and run Malwarebytes about once a month. Malwarebytes has yet to find anything so I assume Norton is handling it. That's on 5 computers...

Just reading this thread - anybody else think Spybot is useless? (thinking if it's worthless, there's no sense keeping it)
