Looks like just a "UNOFFICAL SERVICE PACK" like you can get for 98se! (Otherwise i would think M$ would cut this down big time)

I looked @ some screenshots and it looks interesting for sure!!

Default I'll be watching this

Thanks for posting this.
Are these win 98se unofficial service packs released as source code?

Just curious how would M$ cut this down seems to me if M$ even acknowledges this project they would help (by garnering attention) more than hurt the project.
Sure M$ could probably force reactos to remove references to NT and other trademarked terms but then even more people would realize it's an open source NT kernel/OS.

Realistically if people want an OS that's customized and tunable and all that they're probably going to go with a version of Linux. If people just want their stuff to work they'll go with whatever came installed for them, either the Windows or iOS version appropriate to the time frame in which they bought their computer.

It's a cool idea but I really don't think that it will catch on, Windows 98 wasn't THAT great anyway. About the ONLY use that I, personally, could possibly think of for it would be to dual boot it in order to run "Windows 98" so that you could play Command and Conquer or some other legacy game like that. ... Come to think of it that's a brilliant idea! now if only I actually had any of those games anymore.

ReactOS has been around for nearly 15 years. If MS was going to shut it down, I think they would've done it already.

...And not to open a can of worms but there's one big reason why a (free) "open" Windows is redundant.

Go ahead and install it and post back how it goes, you do have a backup of everything on your computer right?

Since you are paranoid I KNOW you don't have ANY personal information on it.

You do know how to do a reinstall right?

It doesn't mention Windows 98 anywhere. It actually says that it is based on NT (i.e.: XP, Vista, 7, etc...).

What is ReactOS?

ReactOS is a free and open-source operating system based on the Windows NT architecture, providing support for existing applications and drivers, and an alternative to the current dominant consumer and server operating systems.

NT means "New Technology", Windows NT(you saw that coming right? lol), 2k, and ME were all "New Technology" too.

Just saying ME (Acronym for Windows 'Mistake Edition') gives me echoes of those special headaches you get when you've been fighting ME for 6 hours straight to get it to just work and you're ready to go eat lunch and take a nap.
