Go get a copy of the disk. If you're a tech worth your salt you'll do this for XP/Vista/7 (all versions of all 3 to be safe) just to have them on hand. If you're not willing to do this, or don't know how to do this, then you should probably just use your "tech" skills to Google a reliable tech locally to send this person to. Don't ever have a customer go forum hunting and log posting FOR YOU.

She's not a customer. However, I agree. Win 7 is the only one I don't have a copy of. I'm going to have to get one.

FWIW - I see no practical advantage to use a firewall other than what comes with Win7.

My family (between 5-7 computers) has been running nothing but Windows firewall(s) since XP SP2, we run Microsoft Security Essentials, and we are behind a router (which has a hardware firewall). Nearly zero problems for many years now.

Even if the OP uses a different firewall - I'd want the Microsoft one installed to be sure my Windows installation was complete and intact.

Same for me. I just use the Windows firewall. In this situation though, I'm not 100% certain the infection is gone. I'm thinking a firewall like some of the others will stop anything that might still be on her system because they work both ways.

Yeah, I haven't been able to get her computer back yet to fix it more.

some 3rd party software has some better monitoring capabilities and outbound protection is easier but yeah for most people the Windows firewall is fine. I might opt for a 3rd party one if I was downloading questionable programs, illegal music etc. You can monitor connections a lot better for suspicious stuff.

OP didn't say a customer. Said a person. could be a friend etc. This leads me to believe he isn't a tech.

I've been working on computers for about 16 years and I would almost guarentee you that you still have malware on your system or some setting that has been changed that can be easily identified with OTL or one of the other programs of its kind.

Definitely not a customer.

I'm not claiming that the infection is gone, but I ran various anti-malware programs and nothing showed up. OTL is which program?

Just windows firewall??? Jeez I guess that makes me paranoid. I run a pfSense box as my gateway with Snort maxed out. Also run Comodo free on my win7 workstation. And lastly, I run most of my web browser activity through a virtualbox fedora session which I can dump if things get hairy. Someone call a shrink.
