I'm wondering if anybody can talk about good smaller laptops available. I've only ever owned Dell's and I'm not too happy with them. I have a 17 inch that I would keep at a desk, but I would like something more portable. Primary functions would be internet browsing. As it would be a second, I don't want to spend too much.
I recommend the ThinkPad X220 (it's a 12 inch portable laptop). I recommend reading the review below. Even if you don't end up considering this laptop, the review does a good job of covering the aspects of a portable laptop which are worth considering.
But in fact, that laptop is now the longest lasting and fastest ultraportable we've ever tested. How's that for unexpected? When you consider that it packs some of the fastest speeds and one of the nicest panels we've ever used, there's no denying that the X220 is worth its $889 starting price, or the $1,299 our review unit costs. (By the way, that price doesn't include the extended battery, which pushes your total northward by $179.) Plain and simple, the four pound system requires no performance, durability, or endurance sacrifices, and that's not something we can say very often when it comes to the many ultraportables out there. Sure, there are flashier looking options out there (Apple's MacBook Air and ASUS' U36J come to mind), but hey, good luck getting those to run for 15 hours on a single charge.
How much do you want to spend? I know you said you didn't want to spend much, but the range of "not spending much" is very wide. This laptop is on the top end of of not spending much. If you're just browsing the web, maybe a netbook is a better solution for you. Those can range from $200 to $600.
Max would probably be around 500. A netbook is an option, I wasn't sure about all the terminology, they're all just laptops to me. I don't need a big hard drive, mainly just want to be able to have something to carry around to do school work with a good battery life.

To the OP.
If Internet Browsing is almost *all* you do, then would a better *phone* be an easier choice ? Some of these *phones*, can do almost all you would ever do *outside your home*.

Well web and word processing. Need at least one USB port

You would need an USB port only if you don't have an ePrint ready printer. For example, the iPad does not have an USB port, but it prints using Wi-Fi to a large number of printers.
I imagine that some of the other tables can do the same, but I don't really know.

Can ePrint charge a cell phone or transfer files from a camera when on the road? The OP hasn't really indicated why he/she needs a USB port.
